Sri Lanka is facing one of its most serious humanitarian emergencies since the 2004 tsunami. Tropical Cyclone Ditwah has caused record-breaking rainfall, widespread flooding and landslides, the destruction of more than 41,000 homes, and the displacement of over 200,000 people. More than 1.5 million people across 22 districts have been affected.
In response, the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement, a long-standing and trusted member of RIPESS, is mobilising its nationwide network—active in more than 15,000 villages—to provide 24/7 emergency relief, safe shelters, clean water access, WASH services, community clean-ups, and early livelihood recovery for the most vulnerable families.
Sarvodaya’s approach combines immediate humanitarian support with community-led recovery, focusing on essential relief packs, well-cleaning operations, sanitation repairs, hygiene promotion, livelihood micro-grants, skills training, and support for smallholder farmers.
RIPESS acknowledges the extraordinary commitment of Sarvodaya’s district teams and thousands of volunteers who continue to serve tirelessly on the ground.
🤝 We call on partners, networks and allies of the solidarity economy to support Sarvodaya’s ongoing humanitarian and early recovery efforts. Every contribution helps families rebuild with dignity.
